Jakob Rang sündis vana kalendri järgi 03.märtsil 1884a. Jakob Rang abiellus Julie Arensiga 24.augustil 1914 a. (vana kalendri järgi) Kaarli kirikus Tallinnas.

1908. a. lõpetas Heinaste merekooli ja sooritas kaugsõidu tüürimehe eksami Riias. 1914. a. sooritas kaugsõidukapteni eksami Riias. 1924. a. asutas laevaühingu "Rang, Otman, Kurgo" Oli Eesti Laevaomanikkude Üh. Juhatuse liige. Kaubandus - Tööstuskoja IV sekts. büroo liige. 1940. aastast Rootsis. Paguluses asutas koos J. Coobasega laevaühisuse "Rangko". Oli tegev mitmes Välis-Eesti organisatsioonis, olnud Stockholmi Eesti Seltsi juhatuse esimees.
